Day of the open monument 2018

Positive balance on the Day of the Open Monument

Already more than 100 people celebrated a Holy Mass at the opening of the day in our parish church Maria Himmelfahrt, Sayn Abbey and then also participated in the opening event in the cloister. Mrs. Anette Philp held here her laudation on the artist Philipp Graf Schönborn and his 3 light sculptures exhibited in the abbey church until 9.11.2018, a shrine of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, a sculpture of her arm reliquary and a shrine of St. Hildegard of Bingen. Afterwards, District Administrator Dr. Alexander Saftig, as chairman of the Förderkreis Abtei Sayn e.V., opened the new exhibition space in the prelacy, which is 300 years old this year, with a word of greeting.  A large number of people also attended the blessing of the new exhibition room by Pastor Fey. The exhibition room, which will be on view in the future during guided tours of the abbey, was well received by the many visitors throughout the day.

Between 20 and 30 people took part in each of the three guided tours at 11:00, at 13:00 and 15:00. In addition, until about 5:30 p.m., many individuals and smaller groups of visitors were still on the move in the abbey, cloisters and prelature.

Probably more than 500 people visited the abbey during the day. The Förderkreis Abtei Sayn e.V. is in any case very satisfied with the response.

300 years of the prelacy of Sayn Abbey

In 1718, under Abbot Engelbert Colendal, the Prelacy, the abbot's building of the former Premonstratensian Abbey of Sayn, was completed.

The Day of the Open Monument is used as an opportunity to open two exhibitions at Sayn Abbey:
An exhibition room for church treasures has been set up in the prelature with the support of the Sayn Abbey sponsoring group. There, among other things, historical priestly vestments, sacred objects, historical documents and books from past centuries are shown.
During the event, the exhibition room will be blessed and officially opened.

Sculptures in shrine form "shining light figures", shows Philipp count of Schönborn to the topics Elizabeth of Thuringia and Hildegard of Bingen in the abbey church.
The artist himself, nephew of Princess Gabriela zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, will be present in person.

10:00 a.m. Service in the abbey church, celebrated by pastor Joachim Fey.
Afterwards laudation of the artist and the work of art by Mrs. Anette Philp.
Opening of the exhibition room in the prelature by District Administrator Dr. Alexander Saftig, Chairman of the Förderkreis Abtei Sayn.
Short explanation of the exhibits in the new exhibition space by Jürgen Mosen, managing director Förderkreis Abtei Sayn.
Afterwards reception in the cloister of Sayn Abbey.
